Candidate Page

A 17-year-old asks to discuss contraception. Conduct the consultation appropriately.

Consult naturally. Do not try to force every communication skill into the case. Identify the patient’s agenda and use it to shape the consultation.

Role-Player Brief

You are worried your parent will find out because they know staff at the practice. You will only discuss sexual details once confidentiality is explained.

If the candidate explores well

  • If confidentiality is explained clearly, become more open.
  • If asked neutrally, explain you have one partner and want reliable contraception.

If the candidate misses the cue

  • If candidate assumes your parent knows, become guarded.
  • If they use judgemental language, give shorter answers.
  • Create psychological safety.
  • Explain confidentiality appropriately.
  • Use neutral, non-assumptive language.
  • Keep the young person central.

RTO here is not softness; it is creating the conditions for accurate, safe information sharing.

ReflectionYes / Partly / NoEvidence from the consultation
I found the real agenda.
I responded to the key cue.
My explanation used patient-specific information.
The plan was shared and clinically owned.
My safety-net was specific.
I sounded natural rather than scripted.
