Lesson 6.5 — Examiner-Lens Calibration
After each mock, do not ask only, “Was I empathetic?” Use more observable questions.
| Skill | Question | My note |
|---|---|---|
| Cue recognition | Did I notice the patient’s important verbal or emotional cues? | |
| Timing | Did I explore them at a useful moment rather than mechanically? | |
| Curiosity | Did I genuinely try to understand the patient’s perspective? | |
| Adaptation | Did what I learned change my explanation or plan? | |
| Sharing | Was information interactive and understandable? | |
| Autonomy | Did I respect the patient’s choices while maintaining safe professional responsibility? | |
| Sensitivity | Did my language fit the patient’s emotions, beliefs and context? | |
| Ownership | Did I take responsibility for decisions and next steps rather than dumping choices on the patient? | |
| Safety-net | Did the patient know what to watch for and what to do? | |
| Authenticity | Did I sound like a doctor having a conversation rather than a candidate reciting a script? |
