Lesson 4.3 — Time Pressure Without Sounding Rushed

Lesson 4.3 — Time Pressure Without Sounding Rushed

A 12-minute consultation rewards prioritisation. RTO does not mean exploring every possible life detail. It means recognising what matters and managing the agenda transparently.

“There are two important things here: the chest symptoms and how frightened they’ve made you. I’d like to make sure the symptoms are safe first, then come back to the worry.”

Time-Saving RTO Habits

  • Use mini-summaries instead of repeating questions.
  • Name competing priorities.
  • Park a non-urgent issue explicitly rather than silently ignoring it.
  • Ask one good open question, then listen.
  • Use information already offered instead of re-asking it in checklist form.
  • Do not perform unnecessary empathy after every statement.
